Gaelhawks in the Community

This week, the Gaelhawks have been active in our community. We visited the Ansonia Steel Fabrication Company (ASF) with a group of students from our team. We also introduced some younger students interested in robotics to the Gaelhawks program. These activities didn’t slow us down from our usual work of building, programming, and writing!

Our visit to ASF began by talking with them about what FIRST is and what we do in robotics. The ASF company then taught us how laser cutting works and also generously allowed us to use their laser cutting machines to cut metal for our robot. They helped us cut out our Gaelhawks logo on a sheet of metal that will be displayed on the side of our shooting mechanism. It looks amazing!

Later that night during the eighth grade open house at SHS, we invited eighth graders who are interested in robotics to come and observe what we do. We brought them around the workshop and introduced them to our captains who explained what exactly robotics is and how they can become involved with the team in the future. We explained our subcommittees–what each of them does–and how they work collectively to achieve our goals.

For the last few weeks, we have been preparing for our Big Y fundraiser that begins this month. Our team was selected as Big Y’s non-profit organization of the month. For every Community Bag bought at our local Big Y in Shelton, CT our team gets a $1 donation. You can see the Community Bag below.
